Al Gore e CEO Global da JBS defendem agricultura regenerativa para combate à pobreza e mudança do clima

Painel no Fórum Econômico Mundial, em Davos, aponta a necessidade de uma abordagem simultânea entre questões climáticas, desenvolvimento e classe média

A agricultura tem o potencial de capturar de 10% a 20% das emissões globais de CO2. “Se quisermos enfrentar as mudanças climáticas, precisamos investir na agricultura”, defendeu Gilberto Tomazoni, CEO Global da JBS, durante a sessão ‘Um novo trilema: clima, desenvolvimento e a classe média’, no Encontro Anual do Fórum Econômico Mundial, realizada no dia 23 de janeiro, em Davos, na Suíça.

Na mesma sessão, o ex-vice-presidente dos Estados Unidos Al Gore disse concordar com Tomazoni sobre a necessidade de investir na agricultura. Gore afirmou que novos avanços na medição e teste do sequestro de carbono através da agricultura regenerativa permitem usar muitas abordagens para enfrentar as mudanças climáticas.

“Se compensássemos os agricultores com base nisso, isso os ajudaria a superar o período de transição de dois a três anos [necessário para um novo modelo de produção]. Os agricultores querem isso porque os eventos climáticos extremos estão tornando suas fazendas mais vulneráveis à erosão hídrica e eólica”, afirmou.

Tomazoni mencionou os dados do Ifad (Fundo Internacional de Desenvolvimento Agrícola), da ONU, que apontam que somente 4% do investimento em mudanças climáticas vai para os sistemas alimentares, sendo que os pequenos agricultores recebem apenas 1%. Nesse cenário, 67% das pessoas em situação de pobreza vivem em regiões rurais. “Se apoiarmos a agricultura, podemos tirar milhões de pessoas da pobreza e, ao mesmo tempo, impulsionar o desenvolvimento econômico e avançar no enfrentamento do desafio climático”, afirmou.
 

Na JBS, 60% dos fornecedores são pequenos agricultores. Nessa situação, Tomazoni relatou o foco da Companhia em atuar pelo apoio financeiro e tecnológico para a agricultura regenerativa. “Os pequenos produtores precisam de apoio, não apenas financeiro, mas também assistência técnica sobre como fazer isso. Precisamos fazer isso, porque eles são uma grande força para a transformação, disse.

A sessão foi mediada pela âncora da Bloomberg em Cingapura Haslinda Amin e contou ainda com a participação de Dani Rodrik, professor na Harvard Kennedy School, e Teresa Ribera, vice-presidente da Comissão Europeia.
